Harry Bye was born in Woodditton in 1894 (Newmarket Q1-1894 3B:516), baptised 27th March 1894 in Woodditton, son of Charles and Leatha Ada BYE (née HEATH).

1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Hill Farm Cottages, Dullingham with his father Charles BYE [40] horse keeper, worn Woodditton; his mother Leatha [35] born Dullingham; brothers William [16] horseman, John [13] and Edward [10] all born Woodditton; sisters Ellen [14] born Woodditton, Maud [4] and Elsie [5 months] both born in Dullingham.

1911 census...Aged 17, farm labourer, he was at Lower Farm, Dullingham with his parents, brothers John and Edward (both horsemen), sister Elsie and a nephew (son of his brother William- living in Fordham), Edward BYE [4] born Bottisham.


He enlisted in Nottingham.
During the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, 8th Division carried out an attack on 4 March. The 1st Worcesters and 2nd Northants (24th Brigade),in support, the 2nd Lincolns and 1st Sherwood Foresters. Their objective was the German position on the "Hogs Back" overlooking Bouchavesnes, to Nurlu and Fritz Trench and Pallas Trench.
The 1st Battalion had 42 killed that day, 30 have no known grave.
